The King of the Copper Hill, also printed as The Raider of the Copper Hill, is a comic story written and drawn by Don Rosa. It features Scrooge McDuck, Howard Rockerduck, Mrs Rockerduck, John D. Rockerduck, and in his debut, Marcus Daly.
Description[]
Scrooge McDuck is laid off by Murdo MacKenzie , and sets up a claim near Anaconda Hill Copper Works, the richest copper mine in the world. However, it only contains copper. While in a restaurant with the owner of Anaconda Hill, Marcos Daly, Scrooge learns that copper is now extremely valuable for use in electricity wires. While mining for copper in his claim, he meets Howard Rockerduck, who uses the law of apex to prove that Scrooge actually owns Anaconda Hill. However, he soon gets a telegram from his father Fergus McDuck saying that there is trouble back home. Realizing that he must go home to help his family, he sells Anaconda back to Marcos Daly, and goes back home.
Continuity[]
- Scrooge McDuck first alluded to his having once bought the richest copper mine in the world at a time when it was believed to be a worthless claim in Only a Poor Old Man (1952). In that story, however, Scrooge had claimed that he had been aware of the claim's true value upon buying it, which is not the way things transpire in Rosa's account of events.
Behind the scenes[]
The King of the Copper Hill, Chapter 4 of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, was created by Don Rosa in 1992 and first printed in the Danish Anders And & Co #1993-02. It was first printed in English in the British Mickey and Friends #1993-03, under the title The King of Copper Hill, and reprinted in the U.S.A. in Uncle Scrooge #288, as well as in the Don Rosa Library and various collected editions of the Life and Times.
Between the British printing dropping the "the" in "the Copper Hill" and all American printings replacing "King" with "Raider", no English-language printing has used the intended title of the story.
